Why the Eastern Cape Province?

The Eastern Cape Province is one of the most poorest and underdeveloped provinces in South Africa.

The Buffalo City Metro (BCM), where Loaves & Fishes currently works, suffers from low economic growth, high levels of unemployment and high levels of poverty. The BCM Integrated Development Plan 2011 – 2016 demonstrates that 70% of households in the region indicated an income of less than R1500 per month (approximately US$180), with 28% of all households indicating no income at all. In addition, HIV and AIDS remains a large and growing threat within the BCM’s development trajectory, and the lack of appropriate education and skills is one of the major threats to the future development of BCM; a significant portion of the Metro’s potential labour force have not attended school or completed their primary phase.
